To all my English-speaking visitors : as reported first by TMZ on June 25th 2009 at 5:20PM, Michael Jackson, 50, died after suffering a cardiac arrest earlier in the afternoon. The paramedics were unable to revive him at his home, or once at the hospital. Born in 1958, he started singing and dancing as part of the Jackson 5, with his brothers. The release of his Thriller album in 1983, produced by Quincy Jones, made him the King of Pop.

To all my English-speaking African visitors : Michael Jackson, dead at 50, visited Africa for the first time at the age of 14, as part of the Jackson Five. “This is were I come from” were his first words. 19 years later, he was crowned Chief in several African villages, even if it seems he spent most of his time locked in his hotel room or in the back of his limousine… In 1999, Nelson Mandela presented him with a “lifetime achievement award” at the Kora All Africa Music Awards.
His most tangible contribution to Africa is the song he co-wrote with Lionel Ritchie in the mid-80s, “We are the world”. Sung by the leading artists at that time, it raised $50 million to fight against famine in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.

RIP MJ, OK, you’re dead but you’ll remain the King of the Pop !

the world is seriously grieved at this shocking an sudden departure of yours. Never will the world know such a star as you. You were more than a phenomenon. Your marks will never be erased. They can bury your bones but your music lives on. You were and will always be the best.

MJ visited my village a few years ago. He came to Africa for this sole purpose, as he wanted to know about our customs and how this could be linked to his roots.
Therefore we are deeply affected by his death. Our King in the village Nanan Amon N’Douffou IV recently talk about how we could pay tribute to him the African way. We are very sad in ABY.

Africa as a whole is indeed sad after MJ’s death, even if it seems his “feelings” about Africa were mixed, specifically after his last visit. Anyway paying tribute to his memory is a good thing…
